Liya Assefa

Director, Programs

Liya currently serves as a Director of Programs, Knowledge Management, and Learning in support of the END Fund’s ARISE portfolio. She oversees program and grant management for the five countries within the ARISE Phase II: program Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, and South Sudan. Additionally, Liya leads on cross-cutting ARISE workstreams related to sustainability and capacity strengthening, GESI support, and the ARISE learning agenda.

In her first four years with the END Fund, Liya supported programs within the Flagship Fund spanning the five PC-NTDs. She worked with NTD teams in various regions, including Afghanistan, Madagascar, Nigeria, and Angola.

Prior to joining the END Fund, Liya conducted research at the Medical College of Wisconsin related to knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding Zika virus in northern Belize. She also worked at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as a researcher in epidemiology and economic evaluation. Her work focused on the evaluation of surveillance methods for NTD control in Kenya and Ghana. Liya also served as a Program Manager in Peru for GirlSportWorks, an organization dedicated to empowering young women and teaching life skills through sports.

Liya received her MSc in Control of Infectious Diseases from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She also holds a BA in Political Science from Yale University. In her spare time, Liya can be found shooting film photography, visiting new art exhibits, and exploring scenic running routes.
